Climate change is real, don’t let anyone deceive you. Just look at Australia, Indonesia and so many catastrophic events unfolding while people invested in oil try to deny the overwhelming scientific data. You don’t have to be a scientist to notice just have a critical, analytical and objective point of view to notice that it’s an existential issue that puts our livelihood to the test. Are we going to do something about climate change? Whether we acknowledge it’s reality or not, the situation will continue to worsen if we don’t act.
Throughout the Islamic tradition, the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammed, there is clear evidence that as humans it is our duty to care for this Earth.
Where is the evidence that we should care? The first piece of evidence comes from the Quran.
“Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].”
The Quran clearly states that there will be a corruption of the physical Earth, and this corruption will be done by the hands of the corrupted humans. The verse is a clear warning from Allah that climate change will occur.
Why do we have to stand up against companies and governments who turn a blind eye? Well, the Prophet Muhammed said,
“The Earth is green and beautiful, and God has appointed you his stewards over it.” (Muslim)
Islam encourages us to conserve resources
We must go to the Prophet’s example. He was a conservationist, for he said,
“Do not waste water even if you were on the bank of a flowing river.”
Islam4mankind is calling on all the people of conscience especially As people of faith, we have a responsibility to preserve God’s Earth, and we can no longer play a passive role in the fight against climate.
According to Greata the young climate change activists:
Australia is on fire. And the summer there has only just begun. 2019 was a year of record heat and record drought. Today the temperature outside Sydney was 48,9°C.
500 million (!!) animals are estimated dead because of the bushfires. Over 20 people have died and thousands of homes have burned to ground. The fires have spewed 2/3 of the nations national annual CO2 emissions, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The smoke has covered glaciers in distant New Zealand (!) making them warm and melt faster because of the albedo effect.
And yet. All of this still has not resulted in any political action. Because we still fail to make the connection between the climate crisis and increased extreme weather events and nature disasters like the #AustraliaFires
That has to change.
And it has to change now.
My thoughts are with the people of Australia and those affected by these devastating fires.
O Allah, give us rain and do not make us among the despondent. O Allah, (Your) slaves, land, animals, and (Your) creation all are suffering and seek protection. And we do not complain except to You. O Allah, let our crops grow, and let the udders be refilled. Give us from the blessings of the sky and grow for us from the blessings of the earth. O Allah, remove from us the hardship, starvation, and barrenness and remove the affliction from us as no one removes afflictions save Thee. O Allah, we seek Your forgiveness as You are the Forgiving, and send upon us plenteous rains.
