   As-Salaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, Dear Fellow Believers:

As the airwaves continue to heat up with a call for justice in the apparent murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, we of the Muslim Alliance in North America join our voice to those denouncing the wanton killing of yet another innocent African American youth.

    Those of us who are not in denial as to the ugly reality of race and class in 21st century America, know the scenario all too well. Often when police officers kill the innocent unarmed there is uproar, but this situation is far, far worse.

Trayvon's killer was a civilian "wanna-be" cop on a vigilante mission, with a mind poisoned by racism and a soul filled with hatred. His action was not an act of self-defense. It was a violent fantasy made real, and facilitated by local laws in the state of Florida.

We encourage all Muslims to support Trayvon's family in their quest for justice. What happened to that innocent young man could happen to anyone of our sons, nephews, grandsons, or brothers. Do any of us doubt that? Not only should this young man's killer be brought to justice, but the Department of Justice's investigation should include the local police department, who appear to have obstructed justice rather than to have facilitated it.
